Maria and Philip Rodwell, proprietors of Pensjonat "Czerwony Dworek" moved from England to Poland in July 2005. Both Maria and Philip had stressful jobs in England, Maria had a managerial job at a major distribution company and Philip was a senior teacher at a school in their home town of Aylesbury which is 40 miles (64 Kilometres) North-West of London. Maria is of Polish descent; before the Second World War her father's family home being in Freta, Warsaw and her mother's home being in Tomaszow Mazowiecki. Although born in London, Maria often visited Poland with her parents and encouraged by them, developed a love for the Country. From a child Maria was a fluent speaker of the Polish language and well versed in Polish culture. As an adult she continued to visit Poland on a regular basis. In 2003 she visited the Karkonosze and fell in love with the area. It was a visit which was to change the course of her and her husband's life.
Back in England Maria could not forget the breath-taking scenery and the welcoming, friendly people whom she had met while on holiday in the Karkonosze . As a way to relieve the tensions of the business day she began to search on the internet for properties for sale in the region. She and Philip discussed their future plans and decided to look at Pensjonats (guest Houses) and small Hotels for sale. Philip and Maria flew to Poland in March 2005 and stayed at the Spiz Hotel in Milkow. A local estate agent (INDOM ) showed Maria and Philip a selection of Pensjonats and small Hotels for sale in the local area.
When they viewed Pensjonat "Czerwony Dworek" it was an unfinished project but both Maria and Philip could see its potential. Although only 1.5 Kms from the main road leading to Jelenia Gora (10 Kilometres) and Karpacz (5 Kilometres0, the Pensjonat was set in 2.5 hectares of land with uninterrupted panoramic views of the mountains, with sunlight glinting off the observatory on Sniezka. Peace and tranquillity filled their hearts and they fell in love with the property.
